The New 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback
Did you know that the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback is not derived from the Corolla sedan? That's right, the all new Corolla Hatchback rides on a version of Toyota's latest, scalable architecture. The 2019 Corolla Hatchback is built using the same Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) that underpins its European counterpart. When paired with a sport-tuned suspension and the lighter, stiffer TNGA platform: it is easy to see why the 2019 Corolla Hatchback is so much fun to drive.
It has a fully independent suspension rather than a torsion-beam rear axle so the new hatchback holds the promise of a sportier performance than the sedan. The Corolla Hatchback rides 1 inch lower than the outgoing model, but it has a wider stance and is also longer, by an inch or so. The sight-line across the hood offers improved outward visibility due to a new, lower profile. It is also quieter and more comfortable than the Corolla iM it replaces.
The 2019 Corolla Hatchback is powered by a new 2.0-liter inline-4 engine that is lighter and more powerful than the 1.8-liter in its predecessor. Both the sedan and hatchback will be available with either a 6-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic transmission with paddle shifters to sort through 10 simulated gears. Like other Toyotas, the Corolla Hatchback will come standard with a high degree of passive and active safety tech. A total of seven airbags will protect passengers in the event of a crash, but automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, and active lane control will do their best to make sure that doesn't happen.
The overall look of the new Corolla Hatchback shows its European roots. The headlights are more expressive, and the body lines have a little more character than before. From the back, the angular taillights and curvy rear end create an elegant symmetry. The Corolla Hatchback gets its own distinctive mega-grille that has a bit of the Prius Prime in it.
