History of the Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander has had a long ride in the mid-size SUV segment. The mid-sized crossover has changed a lot since its New York International Auto Show debut in April of 2000. It was one of the first SUVs to shuck the body-on-frame design of older SUVs for the unibody design of modern crossovers.

From the beginning, the Highlander was a popular model. It offered buyers an SUV option between the large 4Runner and the smaller RAV4. The first-generation Highlander had two engine options, of which the most popular choice was a 220-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 that made 222 pound-feet of torque. In 2005 the Highlander Hybrid became the first seven-passenger hybrid SUV in the world.

In 2009, the second generation saw the Highlander grow quite a bit in size. It increased 3.8 inches in length, it was 3.3 inches wider, with an additional inch of ground clearance. The second generation also saw the introduction of a 6.1-inch Display Audio system.

In 2014 the third generation Highlander was 2.7 inches longer and a half inch wider. It had a beefier exterior design, and the interior could seat eight passengers for the first time. In 2017 the exterior got a mid-cycle refresh with a new, larger grille as well as the introduction of the SE trim.

The current generation, which began in 2020, debuted with a stylish new design appealing to younger generations. It shifted to the Toyota New Global Architecture which gave drivers an improved handling experience.
