Looking for a car that is American-made and ultra-dependable? Look no further than the Toyota Camry! For the second time in a row, Cars.com has listed the Camry as the most American-made and the best-selling car in the country. This is sixth time overall that the Camry has made the list. The Toyota Sienna also made the list and came in at number three. “This recognition from Cars.com is a tribute to Toyota employees, not only those at the plant who build the Camry but the broader Toyota team who design, engineer, market and finance the vehicle in the United States,” said Bob Carter, Toyota senior vice president of automotive operations. “We also support local suppliers and economies, and we have invested more than $6 billion into our Kentucky operations alone, which is growing with our new production engineering campus under construction there.” All vehicles on the cars.com American-Made Index must meet specific requirements which include having at least 75 percent of parts made domestically and the car must be assembled in the U.S. Domestic sales are also taken into consideration. “Toyota’s new headquarters campus will be a model for energy efficiency and sustainability,” said Kevin Butt, General Manager, Environmental, Toyota Motor North America. “Toyota has challenged ourselves to create a net positive impact on the planet by 2050, and these campus programs are one step in a series of global efforts to achieve this goal.” Reducing energy usage and impact on the environment is a high priority goal for the entire Toyota corporation, specifically the Plano, TX plant. In order to reach these goals by 2050, they have devised several methods and ideas to speed up the process which we’ve outlined for you below. Flower Power Play - The landscaping of the plant will reflect that of North Texas. The native-influenced habitat will include savannah, oaklands, and wildflower meadows. The local flora will attract and promote the growth of local fauna. Rain Body Check - After the local plant and wildlife have taken hold, there won’t be a need for landscaping expenses, like mowing and artificial irrigation. Because the plants are native to the area and will attract local animals and insects, the area will self-regulate. The only watering that will occur will be in select areas and will be done so with a state-of-the-art rainwater capture system. Solar Shootout - The Plano plant will have a 7.75-megawatt solar system designed and installed by SunPower Corp. which will be one of the largest, on-site solar installations in the state of Texas. The system is expected to provide about 25 percent of the power needed for the campus. Renewable Hat Trick - In addition to the SunPower system, Plano will get energy from MP2, a Texas company that focuses on renewable energy. The plant will also use high-efficiency lighting and building shells and will feature rooftop gardens that will help manage rainwater distribution and help insulate the buildings. Age is just a number, right? Yes, but sometimes that number is worth celebrating. That just happens to be the case with the Toyota Kentucky plant which just turned 30! The announcement to start building the plant came in late December of 1985 and thirty years later, that same plant has grown to employ 8,000 people and covers 169 football fields. “Toyota has had a powerful impact on Kentucky’s economy over the past 30 years,” said Governor Matt Bevin. “Continued investment in the Georgetown plant, including the production line for the first Lexus made in the U.S., has put the Commonwealth on the map as a top state for automotive manufacturing. Add to that the more than $120 million invested in local communities, there is no doubt Toyota is a strong community partner. In order to make the road a safer place, Toyota is making a bold promise. Starting with the 2018 models, almost all Toyota vehicles will be equipped with the award winning Toyota Safety Sense (TSS-P) system. Their philosophy is “Why should you have to pay extra to stay safe on the road?” This safety package includes four key features which are designed to enhance pre-existing safety features and the overall driving experience. These four features are: Automatic Highbeams - This feature is exactly what it sounds like but it has a lot of technology behind it. Sensors will be able to detect the light of oncoming headlights and taillights in front of you and adjust the intensity of your headlights accordingly. Dynamic Radar Cruise Control - Vehicle speed will be controlled as with existing cruise control, but now the system will be able to detect the distance in between you and the car ahead of you. If it senses you are too close or the vehicle stops abruptly, your car will immediately slow down to maintain a safe distance. Once the slower vehicle is no longer an issue speed will increase again. Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist Functio n - If your Toyota begins to unintentionally drift to one side of the road, this system will not only be able to visually and audibly alert you but it will also be able to provide corrective steering in small amounts to assist the driver. Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection Function - If a front collision is imminent, this system will be able to alert the driver and take automatic evasive action. Depending on the situation, brakes can be applied automatically and at a stronger force than a driver can input. And although the technology is not perfect yet, the Pedestrian Detection Function will be able to alert the driver to a person who is in the immediate path of the vehicle. Child car seat safety isn’t just about buckling up. Toyota wants to make sure your family is as safe as possible this road-trip season regardless of your destination. Take a look at the list below for some good rules of thumb to follow. Don’t add extra layers between your child and their car seat. Regardless if you want to protect your child from warm plastic or the seat from getting damp after your child has been playing in the water all day, padding the seat with towels or blankets is not safe. The extra material can prevent the seatbelt and seat itself from restraining your child properly. Cool off the car before you get in. Either open the windows and doors or turn the air conditioner on a few minutes before you load the kids in. Not only are you getting some of that stifling hot air out of the car but you are also allowing the materials (metal buckets, leather, and plastic armrests) inside the car to cool off. We hope this goes without saying, but please never leave a child in the car alone especially on a hot summer day. Don’t rent a car seat. Bring yours from home whenever possible. You know exactly how it works, whereas a rented one might not be the same model, be expired (Yes, they expire!), or have been in a crash or not stored properly which could result in weak spots. Remember to use the “Inch Test” and “Pinch Test” every few uses.
