Common Car Smells Identified
Not everyone is a mechanic, but there are some things that you can and should be able to identify as a driver. Some of those things include knowing what’s causing certain smells, like a musty or burning smell. While your first instinct may be to bring it into the shop, you might not need too. In some cases, an unusual smell is just a way for your car to tell you to give it a good cleaning or airing out or to make sure a fluid isn’t leaking. Here are six common smells that will be helpful to add to your basic car knowledge.
Gasoline – Gasoline is something that many of us smell on a regular basis, however, you should only really ever smell it when you are at the gas station. If you smell gasoline on your travels, you should bring your car to a mechanic to have them look at it as there may be a leak in the fuel line or bad fuel pressure.
Sweet – Cars can be “sweet”, as in awesome or cool, but they shouldn’t smell sweet. If you do smell a sweet scent the heater core may be leaking. Next time you park, check the pavement under your car for a puddle of antifreeze.
Sulfur – Sulfur is a pretty distinctive smell. If you smell rotten eggs, bring your car in for a checkup as the catalytic converter may need to be repaired.
Acrid – An acrid smell is a very harsh burning smell and that usually indicates something is burning. Most likely, the smell is burnt brake material so ease up on the brakes while you are driving and make sure your parking brake is completely off.
Burning Oil – Another burning smell you might encounter is that of burning oil. It’s a very distinct odor and is often accompanied by a thick smoke. This smell usually indicates oil leaking on a hot surface, like the exhaust system. Get rid of the leak and the smell should go away.
Musty – A musty smell is a result of standing water or fabric that has been soaked by water. When water collects somewhere it can be a breeding ground for mold or mildew. Check for damp floor mats or upholstery and let your car air out on the next nice day.

Toyota 4Runner Gets New Trims
“The 4Runner has a large and loyal following, with dependability being a key factor. Of all the 4Runners purchased in the last ten years, 90 percent are still on the road,” said John Myers, national manager, trucks and SUVs, Toyota Vehicle Marketing and Communications. “4Runner owners often take their SUVs off the beaten path, so these new TRD Off-Road grades will be a popular recognition of TRD’s history in the off-road arena.”
Introduced in 1984, the 4Runner SUV has been a popular model for Toyota and now it will be combined with Toyota Racing Development technology and features for more power and versatility. Some of the features you’ll see on these new trims are the Multi-Terrain Select System, Toyota’s Crawl Control, high ground clearance, and available suspension upgrades.
The new additions to the 2017 4Runner lineup are the TRD Off-Road and the TRD Off-Road Premium. Both will be perfect for our adventurous customers to take on some of the more challenging trails in the Adirondacks. “It’s critical to foster innovative thinking at a young age,” said Toyota Technical Center Senior Vice President Jeff Makarewicz. “Developing that interest early on can create great opportunities not only for students, but for the industry as well. We’re excited to make this donation, and for our continued partnership with the Michigan Science Center (MiSci).”
The donation that Makarewicz is referring to above is in the amount of $1.44 million and is especially helpful in light of the area’s continued shortage of STEM professionals. The donation will go towards the effort to expose area youth to science, technology, engineering, and math opportunities and the careers that are available in these fields. Specifically, some of the funds will upgrade the existing Toyota Engineering Theater (TET) which houses a unique 4D multimedia experience, and to help MiSci develop new programs and learning experiences for the public.
“Toyota’s donation allows the Science Center to do more than just upgrade the TET. This is an opportunity for us to present STEM in a relatable and relevant way, while increasing student interest in STEM careers,” said Tonya Matthews, Michigan Science Center president and CEO. “This opportunity allows us to continue our mission of being a premier institute for STEM learning and experiences in Michigan.”

Go Inside the Toyota Mirai With Dr. Michio Kaku
While the Toyota Mirai isn’t available in our area yet, it’s still fun to learn about the innovative technology behind this groundbreaking vehicle. One way Toyota is teaching us is through a new 360 video featuring famous scientist, Dr. Michio Kaku. It’s only fitting that a theoretical physicist is the one to take us through the inner workings of the Mirai since the video does just that!
Using computer graphics, Dr. Kaku and viewers are “shrunk” to the size of an atom to travel through the hydrogen fuel cell system found in each Mirai. Dr. Kaku gives us an overview of the fueling process, how hydrogen is used for energy in the car, and how the only emission from the Mirai, water, is formed. Toyota is making a move into the social media world like no other car company. In order to provide a more personalized driving experience, Toyota wants your vehicle to be able to follow you on social media. In doing this, Toyota believes it will be able to “enhance your routine” by offering suggestions and ads for nearby attractions and businesses. They also believe it will help navigation-wise by learning your route to work and suggesting a non-congested route if there is an accident or road work on the roads you normally take.
This “digital concierge” is still in the testing stages for now but don’t be surprised if you see it in a few years time. And for those of you worried about privacy, there will be the ability to “opt-in/out”. Keep an eye here on our blog for all the latest information on Toyota innovations!
